Open Mic FAQ
-
Then this is the perfect venue for you! Try out performing with a friendly, supportive crowd where it’s OK to make mistakes.
-
We usually have a mixed range of abilities. Many people are just beginners, trying out performing. Others are more accomplished. There’s no expectation that you’ll be a high level or not make mistakes. It’s all about giving it a go!
-
We usually have enough time for everyone to have 10 minutes, which works out at 2 songs. Sometimes if there are fewer people we get a second go and you might be able to perform another couple of songs.
-
Yes, you’ll need to have a pickup to be heard over the PA.
-
We are primarily focussed on acoustic instruments. An electric bass or guitar with a clean sound is OK. We also allow smaller percussion instruments like cajon or djembe. We don’t allow loud rock music with overdrive/distortion due to noise concerns from our neighbours. If you need a backing track you can plug in your phone.
-
It’s fine to have up to 2 or 3 people. Our stage is not very big so groups much larger than that may be tricky, but it depends on what instruments you have and how much space you have. We have 2 vocal microphones and 2 guitar inputs.
-
Come and speak to us at the start of the event and we’ll try to put you in a convenient time slot if it’s possible.
-
It’s fine to play unplugged if you like, but you may not be heard very well. Louder instruments like brass or strings are often fine unplugged though. We’ve even had an opera singer!
